Qualifying Deadline for May 3rd Republican and Democratic Primary Ends
Lebanon, TN –Qualifying to be on the ballot for the May 3rd Republican and Democratic primary election closed at 12 noon on Thursady, February 17th. Republican, Democratic and Independent candidates who filed their petitions with the Wilson County Election Commission before the deadline to be included on the May 3rd and August 4th ballots.
Both the Wilson County Republican Party and Democratic Party called for a primary election for all eligible offices as required by state law in 2021. Candidates seeking their Party nominations for the general election will be on the May 3rd ballot. The winners will be on the August 4th Wilson County General election ballot with all the qualified Independent candidates.
Primary elections are defined in Tennessee Code as an election held for a political party for the purpose of allowing members of that party to select a nominee or nominees to appear on the general election ballot. Those voters who can participate in a primary election are those that are bona fide members of or are affiliated with the political party or a voter who, at the time of voting, declares allegiance to the political party in whose primary they seek to vote and states that they intend to affiliate with that political party.
Tammy Smith, Wilson County Administrator of Elections said, “Candidates began picking up and filing petitions for the May 3rd election on December 20, 2021. Although the filing deadline has passed, candidates have until Thursday, February 24th at noon to withdraw and not have their name appear on the ballot. After that deadline the ballot for the May 3rd election will be set.
There will be three elections in 2022 beginning with the Republican and Democratic County Primary Election on May 3, 2022. Candidates running for office in 2022 will be qualified based on the new district lines. Offices eligible are Circuit Court Judge Division I, Circuit Court Judge Division II, Chancellor, Criminal Court Judge, District Attorney, Public Defender, County Mayor, County Commissioners- All 25 Districts, County Trustee, General Sessions Judge Division I, General Sessions Judge Division II, General Sessions Judge Division III, Sheriff, Circuit Court Clerk, County Clerk, Register of Deeds, Constables- All 5 Zones, Wilson County School Board Zones 2, 3, 4 and 6 and one member at-large for Lebanon Special School District.
Petitions are now available for the August 4th Federal and State Republican and Democratic Primary. The offices eligible for this election are Governor, U.S. Congress District 5, U.S. Congress- District 6, State Senate- District 17, State Representative- District 40, State Representative- District 46, State Representative District 57, Republican Executive Committeeman & Committeewoman- 17th District, and Democratic Executive Committeeman & Committeewoman- 17th District
